QotD: Are Evangelicals Deists?

In a presentation on the question of legitimate diversity in the RCC (about a third of the way down this page), Dr. Peter Kreeft says that the evangelical doctrine of the infallibility/inerrancy of scripture, without magisterium and the papacy, amounts to Deism.

IOWs, God was here in the past to cause scripture to be written infallibly, but now we are “on our own” in regard to what scripture actually says.

Seems like a strong point, especially since the evangelicals who do the most to answer it basically set up an infallible magisterium or pope(s) to solve their authority problem. I am seeing less and less differences between the reformed and the Roman Catholics on the practical end of the authority issue. The main difference is the reformed don’t seem to want to admit what they are doing.
