Richard Dawkins (quoting Daniel Dennett) describes evolution by means of natural selection as “the best idea anyone has ever had”.

I’d be interested to know what other contenders for that crown people here would propose.

Remember: the gospel doesn’t count, because it’s a revelation given to us, not an idea someone had… (And if it were just an idea someone had, then it would be a pretty terrible one. See 1 Corinthians 15:19.)
