Sorry to drag things back to Mark Driscoll after Jaredd‘s encouraging post, but Dave Rattigan has written an excellent post on Driscoll’s non-apology and his attempt to recast the controversy as being “a raging debate about gender and related issues” – rather than a protest against his use of bullying language.
Most of the post is taken up with a truly alarming email conversation between Dave and a YFC youth pastor, whose opening gambit is to say “this is just gay” (echoing Driscoll’s own infamous slapdown of Brian McLaren, of course), and who seems to think that protesting against bullying of “effeminate” boys equates to “pampering” them. As Dave concludes:
I’m fearful for the kind of men, gay or straight, who suffer humiliation and distress in churches like these because of the hostile atmosphere created by such brashly declared stereotypical notions of masculinity.
